Two of the most common questions we hear from East Tennessee homeowners are “Do I need new locks?” and “What does rekeying actually do?” The right answer depends on the condition of your hardware and what you want to achieve.
What rekeying does
Every pin-tumbler lock has a set of small pins inside that match the cuts of a key. Rekeying swaps those pins for a new combination. The lock looks exactly the same on the door, but every old key stops working and a new key takes over.
When rekeying is the smart choice
- You just bought or rented a home and do not know who still has keys.
- A key was lost or a roommate, contractor or former partner still has one.
- You want all of your exterior doors to work with a single key.
- Your locks work smoothly and you like how they look.
When replacing makes more sense
- The lock is worn, sticky, rusted or physically damaged.
- You want a higher security grade or a stronger deadbolt.
- You are ready for a smart lock or keypad entry.
- You are updating your hardware finish during a renovation.
Do not forget the door itself
A strong lock is only as good as what it is screwed into. During any visit we check the strike plate, screw length and door alignment — small fixes that make a real difference against forced entry.
